Which upstate city is best for people who want to engage in outdoor activities? I'm talking about:

Hiking
Camping
Skiing
Snowboarding
Sledding
Snowmobiling
Kayaking
Fishing
Walking around parks

You know, things of that nature.

I'd like to be pretty close. As in, less than an hour.

Size is negotiable.

Well I don't know Albany well but it make work.

Utica is within an hour of everything you seek. The ADK's are within an hour.

Anything with snow in it Utica is a perfect match. My daughters BF lives about any hour north and I believe he said they got about 10 feet currently.

As far as the bigger cities, I'd guess and say that Syracuse is very close to quite a few city, town, county and state parks.

For the smaller cities, places like Watertown, Plattsburgh, Ogdensburg and Glens Falls are close to mountains, lakes and rivers. Ithaca comes to mind too.

Utica does have Val Bialas Ski Center within city limits. I think it is only one of 2 such places in the US.

Plattsburgh has a city beach on Lake Champlain that is free to the public for city residents and I believe $5 for town of Plattsburgh residents.

As for Syracuse, you have these places within the same county: SONG MOUNTAIN RESORT

Onondaga Lake Park » Onondaga County Parks

Highland Forest » Onondaga County Parks

Oneida Shores Park » Onondaga County Parks

Jamesville Beach Park » Onondaga County Parks

Four Seasons Golf & Ski Center

Beaver Lake Nature Center, Syracuse, NY » Onondaga County Parks

Green Lakes State Park - NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation

There are other parks that could be included as well.

Nearly every city in NYS has very good nearby outdoors activities, some have a better image than others & you need not be near the ADKs to have them. I enjoy the same activities you listed & that's a big reason I live near Jamestown.

I agree with all the suggestions thus far, but also wanted to throw Lake Placid into the mix. While not really a "city" it does have all that you're looking for.

I agree with Becca. Why not just go for the gold and go with Saranac Lake or Lake Placid? Can't get much closer to the mountains than that. That way, you don't have to deal with the crime/economic depression you'd find in all of the bigger upstate cities. (*cough* *cough* Utica)

If cities are a must, though, Saratoga Springs is just on the outskirts of the Adirondacks, with popular hikes within minutes. Saratoga is a financially well-off city with very low crime compared with others. Hadley Mountain is a popular one near Saratoga. And you're right on the Northway, which will bring you right to the High Peaks in well under 3 hours, New York's tallest mountains.

I think it is a matter of living somewhere with jobs. With that said, Plattsburgh seems like a good fit given the free beach, it is within minutes of the Adirondacks and Green Moyntains of VT, you can go to Montreal or Burlington VT for more nightlife and you have Lake Champlain right there. It will depend on what kind of work is available though.
