The town/suburb areas of Schoharie County have definitely loosened up, which is really good to see. Middleburg especially, as Vroman's Nose has been attracting loads and loads of Albany-area tourists to Middleburg so they can take a good selfie and Instagram it so it makes their friends think they're outdoorsy.
There are some parts of the county that are incredibly isolated, though. Freakishly isolated. Like, no cell service or radio reception-isolated. And the flooding from Irene didn't help their isolation much. I actually have distant relatives who belong to a legitimate cult located south of Carlisle.
I would say that the open-minded and more "civilized" parts of Schoharie County would be found mainly in the parts north of Middleburg and east of route 30, and the parts around Cobleskill. And what Irene did to isolate the "boondocks" parts more, it made the larger towns more united and accepting of outsiders. In this day and age, you'll be fine in the populated areas.
