You can probably do it in 1 hr and 20 min if there is no traffic. That's a tough commute though! Going to work might not be too bad if theres no accidents, 7am is still early. Coming home is a different story, right during rush hour and you have to drive back into the city? Can you take the LIRR instead?
I could be wrong, but Centereach doesn't have a train station I think, so the OP would have to go to another town and cab it to work. Don't know if that is worth it, either...although I do agree...NYC to Centereach is a pretty hairy commute.
I am very partial to LI (born & bred) and I'm not trying to change your fiance's mind- but if your fiance is working in the city and you are working on LI, why not consider moving to LI? There are some great affordable areas in Nassau County and it's very easy to get to the city as well as to Suffolk from virtually anywhere.
You are going to hit traffic during the rush hours for sure, I can almost guarantee it.
i cringe just thinking of this commute! early morning shouldn't be a problem, especially since you will be going against traffic. however, rain/snow changes everything. any weather conditions and you add instant stress to your commute. driving through any of the boroughs becomes exhausting over time. look into the lirr as a possibility?
I HATE that... .everyone on LI says "it's only an hour to Manhattan" or, if they're driving somewhere on LI, no matter WHERE it is "20 minutes".....
From Midtown Manhattan to Centereach is AT LEAST an hour, 20 minutes but probably more. Door to door, it would probably be an hour and a half. And, like others have said, if it so much as drizzles, you're adding time. If there's an accident and you have the typical gawkers? Tack on even more time
I live in massapequa and its a 55 minute drive, WITH NO TRAFFIC. Centereach is a good half hour from me so if youll be hitting the roads at peak travel time, expect a 1 way commute to be at least 1 1/2 hours, and thats providing there arent any accidents.
I have recently gotten a job out on Long Island. My Fiance is getting an apartment in Manhattan (Silver Towers). How long of drive would it be going to Centereach Long Island in morning (7 a.m.) and coming back in (5 p.m.)? I am basically just wondering if I would be able to do it in the mapquest/googlemaps time of 1 hour and 20 minutes?
also somethign else i realised...it costs a fortune to park a car in NYC! I'm surprised you will even be having a car. Most people give it up if they move to the city.
