I have only been to NY a handful of times and am in need of some advice. I'll be working just off 5th Ave and W. 14 St. I am looking for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in a safe place, under $2k, with a relatively short commute to work (30-45 minutes tops). Any suggestions? EDIT: I am also looking for a more suburban area with shopping centers, etc.

Someone suggest Forest Hills. How long would that take to get to work using the train? I am completely oblivious and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

I'm a big fan of Hopstop and the MTA Trip Planner websites. They'll both give you a pretty good idea of travel times between locations.

Try Williamsburg, Brooklyn. You can find nice 1 BRs there for under $2000 and your commute will be less than 10 minutes via the L train.
