I generally tip 18 to 20 percent, like I would in a restaurant. They problem is I always order for one person from inexpensive places and so the tab isn't much to begin with. For an $8.00 order I'll give the guy $1.50. Percentage-wise this seems fair, but they sometimes look disgruntled, as if I'm being cheap. A $2.00 tip on a $8.00 tab would be 25 percent, which seem a bit much. Thoughts?

I give a minmum of $2.00 on orders up to ~ $22.00. Therafter, about $3.00 - $5.00 on a sliding scale up to ~ $40, which would be my rare max if it's for several people and the order is larger. I never do a percentage calc as I would in a restaurant where I'm being served.
Don't lose your appeteite over the disgruntled looks - times are tough and delivery guys in NYC usually never really show a happy face. I understand where there're coming from with that but I'm not responsible for their predicament in life, but I certainly try to offer what I consider fair.
Hope that helps.
P.S. It may help you, but blow it for me when the ladies here figure that a date with me will get them not only just an egg roll only, but an embarrassing evening as they watch me pay the delivery guy.

I think it's just the change gives people the vibe your cheap. lol. In their minds its just 50 cents, you should just give them $2.00. In your mind its 50 cents and $2.00 is a 25% tip!
I generally give $5, especially if it's place from which I order frequently. For some of the regulars, around this time of year, I'll give them an extra large tip, and sometimes a small gift like ear warmers/gloves and an extra tip for all their service.
At minimum, though, I'd go with the $2 rule, no matter the size of the check, and never take change. I agree with NooYowkur81 that it's probably the change aspect. For me, if the tab comes to $11.39, I will either have the correct change or will round it to the next highest dollar, as opposed to making them give me $0.61 back, so I'd give them am minimum of $14 in that example, more for a regular. $2 is the minimum that I give the parking valets, and they're not so intimately connected with getting food to me at the proper temperature and in proper condition.

I try to do $2 minimum. But, I hardly ever get food delivered. I feel lazy doing that, plus I also like to save my money, so I go out to get it no matter what the weather lol
