All the time--how else am I gonna get home drunk? On the other hand, I try to wait until at least 6 or 7 am on a sunday schedule to even bother heading home because the waits could kill you. F to 169th and Hillside.
What train are you going to take? A lot of them are out of service on late night weekends. Be sure to check the mta website. And you will be waiting a long time if the train is running.
There is only one part of the system that is out of service on the weekends: the J train terminates at Chambers Street rather than Broad. You can always get a train on every other line (some might be running as locals rather than expresses late at night, but there will always be a train coming into the station). The thing is that most lines run on 20 minute headways late at night. This isn't just speculation; I'm a tower operator with MTA, and I have a pretty good idea about how trains run!
On the weekend at 4:30AM from 23 Street in Manhattan? Now here's the thing: you didn't say which 23 Street station you're starting from. If it's 8 Avenue, you'll be able to get the A train at that hour. Broadway, the N train. 6 Avenue, the F. At 7 Avenue, the 2. Or on the Lexington line, the 4 will stop there. All of these lines run to Brooklyn. (It is, of course, impossible to give specific directions without a specific destination!)
I take late night trains back to Mott Haven all the time...I am the silly but quiet drunk dude with the bloodshot eyes on the 2/5/6 train heading home around 4am to Mott Haven. See you soon!
