All the office is talking about how the A train broke down this morning when the doors wouldn't open at the 125th Street station. (which I was on) creating 30+ minute delays on the A,C D and B lines and also affected 1 train riders who transfer at 168th Street. Nothing like leaving your place early only to arrive an hour late to work. 2nd time this month that's happened on the A train.

I'm taking Metro North in the mornings from now on since it's more a lot more reliable. That's the good thing about living way up in Inwood; I can walk to the Metro North station and get into Midtown in about 10-15 minutes.

But with all the weekend construction and fare hikes you'd think there'd be better service. True, NYC is one of the better subway systems in the US and runs 24/7 but there's room for improvement

It's called "I'm A 37 year old R46 subway car. If it were human years, I'd be 86. I'm old and will break down. I'm scheduled to be replaced beginning in 2017 with the R211, the beginning of the next generation of subway car."

This is a dumb complaint. Seriously.

I personally had more fun on the 4/5/6 this evening on my 49 minute trip between grand central and brooklyn bridge city hall.

Naive rather than "dumb". Yet, it espouses the fantasy of urban life and urban/mass transit vs the reality of urban life and urban/mass transit. The reality rarely coincides with the self entitled nature of the average Transplant.

In just a few years, prorbably just after the upcoming mayorial election, Transplant demands, such as the OP's "room for improvement" will come head to head with the *political* nature of urban cities, particularly NYC.

Going to be fun to watch....

There is a solution -- ditch the subway and ride a bike to work. If you can't do that, then live with the MTA, the worst of the worst.

ehanson,

You probably should live in a neighborhood that has multiple subway lines and tracks and other transportation options. There are places in Queens and Brooklyn that offer this.

Or move up to the Bronx and live somewhere nearer an MNR station.

I'm assuming something happened on Lex this morning as my 5 train was detoured to the West side and terminated at Times Square.

better? NO
elaborate system compared to other cities in the usa? yes
value? maybe..there seem to be no other great alternative although there is another giant discussion in another thread how we should bike around nyc.

MTA as a company is a vortex money pit. Say there are even 20 work days a month. In my experience....in the past few yrs, the subway is delayed or craps out about 3x a month. so its almost once a week for the daily rush hr commuter like myself.
