There's a big difference in my opinion, hipsters tend to make less money and be more into partying. And tend to be more artsy.

Yuppies are from the NYC suburbs. Hipsters are from Ohio.

This is a hipster. Note the beard and how he is curating the hand harvested, small batch femented tea. Also note that he makes $18,000 a year following his passion. Additionally, the board behind him is in Russian. Not because this is in Russia, but because it creates an edgy, hipster ambiance in this cafe.

This is a yuppie. You may notice that while he has taken some fashion cues from the hipsters that work at his favorite chai house, unlike the servants there, he sh**s hundred dollar bills and p***es single malt scotch. He works in some industry that would make the hipster puke. He has not read Camus, nor Marcus Aurelius. He does, however know a custom leathercraft shop where he bought his $3,000 attache case.

And here is a handy guide for differentiating the two in the wild. Feel free to print it out and keep it in your wallet. (crediting the source of course!)

Heh? No.

The difference isn't point of origin. Each can come from anywhere.

The difference is what, if anything they're trying to accomplish. Yuppies, by definition (note the word "professional" being part of the base acronym), are career oriented. They're looking to develop their professional skills, reputation, and network. Hipsters are more about, well, being hip. Looking ****, having fun, etc.. They have no desire to develop anything. They don't seem to care about the future, although they may give the appearance of such, insofar as it improves there level of hipness.

Same ethnic demographic for the most part; key difference in my mind is hipsters represent squandered white privilege.

You think they're the same because they're both white?

Also, Brooklyn's hipster scene is more diverse than people give it credit for even if it is predominately white

Interesting view. Where I live, the majority of hipsters are Hispanic or Native American.

I think it is not racial (a shocker to an American, I know), but based on economic class. Middle class kids are attracted to the hipster style/lifestyle.

I see quite a few black, Latino, and Asian hipsters in Brooklyn
