Just curious, since those 2 words are used so often on this board. I don't know if I'd be considered one of them. I don't want to be hated in the city lol
Hipsters are usually trustafarians who do not really have the jobs to support their lifestyle, and they do not care, they will just live off their trusts. They sometimes pose as writers, actors. They also try to act poor
Yuppies usuallly have higher paying jobs, plus most are also trustafarians as well. Lots of them also do not have high paying jobs, but they try at least. They do not try to act poor.
They also dress different
Hipsters try to dress poor, but in reality their clothes are expensive, but they mimic the poor style
Yuppies like to dress monied, and do not try to hide it whether they can afford it or not.
None of them are real NYers, and never will be according to the real NYers
Sexual orientation among them can range the entire spectrum.
They do like to congregate together because they compliment each other, and make each other feel diverse. They are like the ying and the yang.
Rachel, as a schoolteacher I really don't think you should worry about people calling you a "hipster" or a "yuppie." Your job is way too "conformist" for you to be a "hipster" and you don't make enough money to be a "yuppie." Typical yuppies work in banks, as lawyers, as publicists, in real estate, etc. Typical hipsters either have no job or have a job as a barista, paint/do sculpture and sell it, or try to make music.
I think it's lame too. I think it's pretty damn insulting to people who actually are poor. Also, at $55,000 you are making a great salary for our age, but I'm not sure you would be a yuppie because of it. I guess if you like trendy sushi joints, Coach bags, and are into Sex in the City you could be considered a yuppie; however, there really aren't many yuppies in your profession.
I guess I am a yuppie,,,
Sorry for all of you real NYers...
