we used to build alot of snow forts in the big piles of snow plowed off the walkways.we found some underground huts between the ballfields and the bay.when someone had a baby carraige in the "bike rooms"that was old and falling apart,we would "attain" the axles and wheels.find some scrap lumber, borrow dads saw, hammer, some nails and build go carts.did you ever make(forget what we called them)these things?take an old metal wheel skate in half and nail it to each end of a 2x4.then an old wooden soda box nailed to the front of 2x4.some paint and old reflectors and jar tops for decoration.its amazing i never broke a bone.(i think lol)

did you play cracktop?skelly?ring-o-leavee-o?did you know fat mitch?i remember being able to go down and play between our building and the one towards 51rst.too short to press the buttons to come up to 5th floor, would jump and hit all buttons to 4th, then walk up one floor.all the windows that overlooked the grounds between buildings were manned by moms who would immediately yell down,...."you better behave yourself or i'll call your mother,....don't make me come down there!" we moved out by 67/68.quite a different world there now.

fat mitch used to bully me and take my big firetruck with a big ladder.i told my dad that i needed him to stop fat mitch.he told me he could do that, but he couldn't allways be there to protect me from bullies.he said if i had to fight him it might hurt.if i didn't fight him, more bullies would get ideas, and it would be worse.so i used the fire truck as bait,....lured him over to the sticker bushes(you know they were serious sticker bushes if you lived there)and pushed his azz and the truck in the bushes.he howled and cried and couldn't get out.i grabbed the truck and went upstairs.so i knew fat mitch.lol

I like Rockaway but I think our main problem, and I hate to say this, are these young guys. They're heathens. I've been here a while and most people around here are friendly; especially the older people and the guys that are in their mid to late twenties or older are cool too. But these young teenage guys are awful. They have no respect and no regard for life. I think they are the reason we have such a bad rep. This young guy, maybe about 15 or 16 tried to grab me up the other day. He didn't know I was 21 and grew up in Jamaica, Queens lol Needless to say he nearly got his jaw ripped off. But like I said, other than that Rockaway is cool.

we moved uptown in 67/68.went to st francis.it was an awesome childhood.stoop ball, stick ball, b-ball,the beach.we used to go to met games by ourselves when i was 10 and on.i still live in the rock, and know people i graduated from 8th grade and beach channel still.a couple more years with the city and i retire.i will move out of nyc/rock then.i'll visit some but will be glad to leave.the other lady poster is right.a lot of kids are just retarded, and on the path to jail, cemetery, and a life of no job no life.i don't see that changing.i live on a real good block with great neighbors but i'm a country guy at heart.i've got a place upstate that i love,so does my son.i'm a single dad and would move today if i could.need to get him out before high school years.
