What the historians will never tell you is one of the first familes to move out of the projects were middle-income blacks who could not stand that area anymore. And that was way back in the early 1970's. Nothing has changed.
Finally, a few honest comments about that cesspoll.

there was always trouble when i lived there but it wasnt sooooo bad as it is now. im only 16 yrs old and currently living in Seattle because my mom thought it was the best place to be instead of living in the projects for the rest of our lives. i just wish the kids and teenagers werent soo terrible and make far rockaway seem like a piece of crap. far rockaway used to be a place where everyone wanted to come @ one point for our lovely beaches n playgrounds. now, no one wants to come over to even visit family and friends. its a shame, and yet i still want to move back to far rockaway. i miss home and u cant forget where u come from.
Thank your mom for getting you away from those animals. You can be from the hood but don't have to act like the others. Judge Sotomayor came from projects in the bronx. Most successful people who came from the hood never associated with people around them when they were growing up. They had a different mindset. Get an education, work hard, don't do drugs, and respect people. The people that matter will respect you for this.

I moved to a building in Far Rockaway on the beach on one of the worst blocks in the area. I am a teacher in NYC and make a great salary. I actually think despite it all Far Rockaway has potential. The beach is beautiful.

I think once the real estate market returns people may take a second look at the area. I am not really scared. I am a New Yorker and used to wealthy vs. poor areas. I just mind my own business, keep my eyes open, and respect people in the neighborhood.

No matter what people love the beach and willing to invest in it if the opportunity arises. I intend to buy something here if I see something I like. It is a buyers market right now.
