Hell, before the hike we save $6 on every hundred we put on.
I'm sure there's a limit, don't know what that is though. But you don't really want too much on one card in case of loss/theft. It's best to spread it over multiples

Well, since I am a senior with a picture ID card, multiple cards are not an option. I went over $100 without any problems. I will try adding another $40 today and see what happens. Yes, losing the card would be a BIG pain in the ass.

The max you can put on a regular Metro card is $99. It won't let me add anything over that. I have tried.

Hmmm, I got over $100. Perhaps the senior cards are different? <Perhaps I should shut up?>

Hmmm, Chase Freedom Cards are offering a 5% blow-back on all charges for "ground transportation" this quarter. So 6% + 5% = 11%...worth a little trouble.

Got to love that. I'd max out your 5% cash back benefit if you can afford to put all of that on the card right now, plus you'd get the bonus for the top up before it decreases. Myself, unlimited monthly pass. I've never added fares. So just 5 more bucks for me.

I am going to take your advice, PDF. Gotta check the max for the cash-back.

Monthly pass: learned my lesson. Moved into town and bought a monthly. I rode down to Astor Liquors Christmas eve to stock up and immediately caught the flu and we got a massive blizzard and I was laid up for the next month. It was $56 (I believe that was the senior tariff in 2010) for 2 rides ($38 each.)

I have never been able to make monthlies work for me so now it is per-ride only.

Its alright. I also have Chase Amazon Signature, it has 5% cash back year round on Amazon purchases, and 2% in restaurants, drug stores, and gas stations, but points can only be spent on Amazon, which I don't mind, since I buy a lot there. Outside of Chase Freedom qualifying categories, the Chase Amazon card is just better and/or equal to Freedom.

For anyone else that ever gets caught up in this situation, you can call up the MTA and tell them you lost the card, they will refund you pro-rate for the days left. Providing you paid via credit or debit. Call 511.

Ditto. Although now that the cash bonus is dropping from 11% to 5% I suppose I should redo my calculations, but I'm fairly sure I'll be sticking with pay-per-ride.

Let us know if you can go over 100$ on a regular MetroCard, I'm interested. I know you didn't use to be able to, but I haven't tried in many years.
