I am a certified NYS guidance counselor seeking employment in with the NYC DOE or a Long Island school district.
I have searched all of the websites and know that many of the jobs are never posted.
Anyone with info regarding how to access or network these unposted jobs?

I wish I could offer you some advice. It might help to identify schools that you want to work in, and just call them. I am in a city school (in the Bronx) and I know my principal is always open to walk-ins and people calling up to ask about positions. However, I don't know if that's the norm.

It really does help to know someone, especially on LI. Guidance jobs are even hard to find in the DOE, because they don't hire many counselors. It's a shame, too. Our school has one for 550 kids.

Thanks for the info.
I thought calling/visiting schools was an option.

I decided to sub this year to get in a school but I am in another city. I landed a peer counseling teaching job as a sub within a matter of weeks and once I am certified the position is mine. At the time the school needed a 7th grade guidance counselor. If cold calling does not work, my advice is to get in as a interim sub or sub while looking for a job to get to know the principles and giudance office and make it clear that you are looking for a position as a counselor. Once they see you are competent and good with kids their reference will land you a job within a few weeks. You just need to get in.

this year is not a good year to be looking!! You might want to try to work at a college while applying to districts....

Wow good luck with the search. I am in the same boat as you. I am certified in NY, DE and MD. With my experience and education I am beginning to think it is a setback in landing my dream job as counselor. Keep the faith something will come. I have been substituting for the past five years in the same district and openings have come and I wasn't given an interview. I taught in NY for years relocated to DE and it has been downhill ever since. Recieved Master's in counseling in 06, don't mean to be a downer but just reality.

i'am relocating to NY at the end of May, 2010. If anyone knows any schools that would be looking for a counselor sub or if there are any openings for guidance counselor positions, please email me at simplynchima@gmail.com. I've been looking for a job and haven't heard anything from anyone. i don't want to give up hope and hoping something will open up. if anyone knows of any schools that need a guidance counselor, email me.
another field i'am interested in is multicultural counseling and working with the refugee population. If anyone knows of any job opening in both those fields, please email me as well. Thank you.
