Trader Joe's for me, Zabar's for people who cook/eat better than I, huge number and range of other food- or home-oriented stores. Amsterdam Av branch of the public library with periodic excellent used book sales (I finally found out where that kind of thing happens in NYC! Not as big, or as continuously ongoing, used book extravaganza as that of San Francisco public library, but excellent quality of material). I have come to the conclusion that the leading factor in my choice of place(s) to live could be the proximity and quality of the local branch of public library :-). While both areas are probably the places in the US most similar to Europe, the UWS is somehow more similar to Continental Europe, while the UES is more similar to Britain.
My favorite place to live in NYC would probably be West End Av from the W70th to W85th St, but it will probably never happen because I don't see any tiny units to buy in that area (the ideal size for me would be 350 sq ft).
