I currently live on Ditmars and Steinway in Astoria, but I am considering moving to a place right next to the train stop on Grand St on the edge between Williamsburg and "East Williamsburg"? Any thoughts? How safe is that area? I know that I would love being 10-15 minutes away from Union Sq.

Yeah it's safe. A slight bit gritty looking, but safe.

It seems you have to watch out for Iranian band members shooting with a rifle on the rooftops. This just happened last night less than a 5 minute walk from the Grand L. Crazy story! Four dead in East Williamsburg; rock band member shot self on roof after killing three former mates: NYPD - NY Daily News

But yes, in general, I do agree the area is safe enough. I personally wouldn't want to live across the street from a high school, and there is one on the corner of Grand and Bushwick. But besides that, I would definitely consider living in that area. It's not cheap these days.

Living by any school is not as bad as you think if you're a regular M-F 9-5er. I live across the street from a school (K-8) and while its not a high school, I barely see any kids from the school because I'm at work.

You could also be in a drug free school zone, which some would value as a plus.

It's either 500 or 1000 feet from a school radius, I forget. I definitely am in one.

I've been there, late at night, a few times. Never felt unsafe. There are a lot of cool restaurants and stuff in that area as well.
