Is it just me, or does the tower look comparatively short? The Twin Towers were so awesome (literally, inspiring awe), but it may be because there were two of them. They seemed bigger and grander.
Actually it is the exact same size as Tower 1 of the original WTC towers. But the way the building slants inward makes it seem not as standout-ish that the original towers had with it being more boxy than this building.

That's because there are buildings there that werent there when the twin towers existed. Taller buildings in the area that make the new One WTC look shorter. I had to look at comparison pics to notice. The height to roof though is identical to the original north tower. 1,368 feet.
WTC 1 is probably the strongest commercial building ever constructed in history. All those others are major projects which are designed with the latest in technology.

Though WTC 2 is actually stalled, looks like we are just getting a little stumpy building in its place for now.
WTC 2 is awaiting a major tenant. Soon.

Brooklyn was supposed to get a supertall in downtown BK. It was shot down but it's coming eventually. A lot of high rises are going up there.

I hope so, it was the one tower out of the four that I really liked.
As for downtown Brooklyn, it looks like they have two more tallest buildings coming their way in the next couple years standing at about 590ft and 596ft, so they are getting closer to braking 750ft....though it is odd that their tallest are going to be residential.

I think with the new urbanist ideas sweeping the city, mixed use is the way to go. I think office districts are going to continue to blend into a residential mix over the next few decades.

You are probably right, don't think we will see as many solely office towers outside of Midtown much anymore in this city.

Look at all the residential construction and conversions in Midtown for instance. Even the financial district.
People want to live closer to work and play. Mix it all together. Districts are an idea of the past. Mixed use is the way to go.
Live-Work-Play-Produce. All within walking distance.
