So my buddy and I work and currently rent in Garden City, NY (on LI). The rent here is $3100+utilities and it just isn't worth it any more. We found a way to break our lease and are looking to get closer to the city. Our combine income is right at $100k, but we want to spend around $2000 on rent, give or take. We also have two cars and a dog.

Basically I am looking for an area to move to that is good for us. We will both be commuting to Garden City. Definitely want an area that has a subway train into the city, an ok commute, people our age (24), a park or two for the dog, and a place were parking isn't a nightmare or is cheap monthly.

We were told to look into Astoria and Williamsburg. Any feedback or suggestions would be great, thank you in advance!

Were you planning on driving to Garden City or take the LIRR? Wouldn't you want to live near Forest Hills area rather than Astoria or Williamsburg?

What's the most you want to commute then, time-wise, in both directions? I'm not an expert on the Queens area, but I know that driving by LaGuardia usually sucks. If you're in Forest Hills / Kew Gardens area, you at least have a choice of driving or taking the train, and you have a few options for the subway or taking LIRR to Penn Station.

Wanting a 45 min commute realistically, can I do that from Astoria or Williamsburg, the earliest I'll ever have to be in work is 9 am, and that's only occasionally.

Disclaimer: I don't drive, but I know traffic can be rough in that area and a 45 min commute can easily double that if you get caught in it.

I don't think 2k is very feasible for a 2 br in Williamsburg anymore, and I think you're looking for something with a nightlife, so I can't make a hard recommendation for you. If I were you, I would look in a few places in Williamsburg (>Astoria, even though I hear it's beautiful there too) so you wouldn't have to deal with LaGuardia traffic too much, and also look at a few places in Kew Gardens ish area, and see what you prefer.

We just need some nightlife and some decent cost of living. Is there young nightlife at all in Kew or Forest Hills?

There are a few bars in the Forest Hills area and lots of restaurants. Also there are 3 movie theaters (2 multiplex and one duplex).
