Hi Everyone,

I am a mature international student returning to University in Manhattan, NY for Fall 2012. I lived in NY for a year in Old Mill Basin area where I felt comfortable but did not like the commute, it was 1.5 hours (one bus and 2 trains).lol
I also stayed in Bed-Stuy and I had like commute time but not the area.

I am a black female and would prefer a safe and ethnic diverse neighborhood with a commute time of 30-45 mins.
Also would like to be in close proximity to subway, grocery and restaurants.

Need help deciding whether to move to Brooklyn, Queens or New Jersey.
Also has anyone ever heard or know anyone who use INSURENT as a guarantor. I have read reviews online but just wanted to be sure not a scam.

Some of the areas I am looking at in Brooklyn:Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Prospect Park and Carroll Gardens. In Queens: Astoria, Sunnyside and Rego Park. In New Jersey: Jersey City, Hoboken and Bayonne.

Additional Information:
Will you buy or rent? Rent
What is your budget ? 800 - 1500 (including some utilites)
What kind of place are you looking for ? 1 BR apt or studio (prefer 1 BR)
no share too old for that.
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? N/A
Do you need/want good public schools? N/A
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) Neighborhood - safe and ethnically diverse (A MUST)
List three things that are important: Safety, short commute and close proximity to grocery and subway (like 4 blocks or less)

Please comment and suggestions are welcome.

Thank you in advance,

Jackson Heights, Forest Hills, Woodside or Sunnyside, Queens.

Sunset Park (south side, near Bay Ridge).

No. You have to take a bus to the subway. Jackson Heights is right on the subway and it gives you the choice of the 7, R, M, F, E.

I was looking at New Jersey communities the other day and it looks like the commute from Harrison on the PATH train to Manhattan is excellent, so that might be something to look into. I don't know anything about the community but look it up on city data and see what it says.

Harrison is a decayed, rundown city that's being brought back bit by bit. There are some new apartments and condos there near the PATH station, and a lot more people are now using Harrison as their commuting point (it amazes me how many people get on the PATH train at that stop lately--I think there's a new parking garage.). It's worth looking into. The OP's rent range is kind of low for most of NJ, but she might be able to find something there.
