i'm guessing that when the trains were built, the majority of the middle classes didn't travel from the outer boros to the outer boros for work and instead the majority traveled from the outer boros to Manhattan for work. those who did live in the outer boros who were of means had cars to travel to the outer boros for work and for leisure.
One reason was that NIMBYS didn't want to bring in "undesirable people" to their areas therefore shot down many proposals. Also, around the time of the proposals, freeways, cars, and suburbia were rapidly expanding; money went to freeways. Another reason was a man by the name of Robert Moses(sarcasm) who wanted to run freeways through the city wrecklessly(and did quite a bit though he was stopped in time to cause more damage) and didn't put much effort into expanding the subway system.
Yeah I checked and it is pretty cheap. To be fair though, their system doesn't look like its quite as vast.
It's more convenient-from any part of town to any part of town, not just to the city center like in NY like the op is talking bout, the vastness factor loses purposes when it takes 2 hrs to get somewhere.
Also here its pretty complicated, it takes a while just to figure out where you are going and how for someone new, and you might have to wait for your specific train for like 15 min, ove there it's just two directions with two trains so you spend less time waiting around

How does the vastness factor lose meaning if you're speaking about how long it takes to get from one end of the line to the other?
If you're going from one point to another that are far from each other, then yeah, it's gonna take awhile. That's how it works without teleportation. It's the same deal in London, which is even more expensive than here mind you.
As far as you thinking it's confusing, again it's because the system
is pretty large. Just learn that sh1t and you'll be fine.
Im saying the outer boroughs are not connected well between each other so it's taking a lot longer than it does in moscow to get from one outer part to another outer part
