I've never been to the eastern parts of Long Island but from reading other posts I've come to the conclusion that E. LI and N. Westchester (around Katonah/Bedford) are pretty comparable. The homes are more spread out, there's more a small town feel. Quaint but still classy but still fairly close to New York. Is this true? Are these to areas comparable? If so, which one is better in your opinion?
What part of Eastern Long Island are you talking about? If you're talking way east, it's not really all that close to NYC. At least a 2 - 3 hour trip via LIRR. Driving? Probably the same. From Katonah to Grand Central on the Metro North, it's only about an hour or so.
As far as space and quaintness, I would probably prefer Katonah or Bedford over LI.
Northern Westchester has a different lifestyle because you are not as limited as the Island. You are a stone's throw from Ridgefield, New Cannan, Stamford, Greenwich, and it's much easier to get to other areas in New England than it is from LI as you first have to get off the island. While there are demographic and density similarities, I would definitely prefer Northern Westchester, though I am admittedly biased in that respect.
