I have heard that street parking is free in Manhattan saturday and sunday, I know sunday it is but is it free saturday as well?

Also, what are my chances of getting street parking in the area around FIT at about 645 AM on a saturday and sunday?

Thanks

Street parking is not free on Saturday -- Sundays only. Chances of getting a spot that early around there are pretty good, but read the signs carefully. There is a timed limit at the muni spots, so you could be limited to the max number of hours you can feed the meter for (i.e. require multiple trips out to get a new ticket depending on how long you need to park).

You can find parking lots as low as $10 and around $20 with coupon specials on weekends, which is significantly less expensive than a ticket. Check nyc.bestparking.com and iconparkingsystems.com for some deals in the area.

If you were to find a legal spot in a residential area, not on the avenues, you could park all day, every day, save for the required movement for alternate side parking for street cleaning. That can be a challenge, but is possible, and again, pay attention to the signs.

Just drive around the side streets and hope to find someone pulling out of an "alterate side of street" spot to get to work Saturday morning. It might take a while.

If you find something it will likely be good for Sunday too. You won't have too much competition at that hour.

You should also check www.parking.com for deals. For THE BEST deal in Parking anywhere in Manhattan, East River Plaza (116th street adjacent to the FDR) has monthly parking (covered!) for $89 per month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One other tip if searching for parking on a side street, I would focus on areas to the west of FIT as you stand a better chance of finding street parking that's non-metered, or otherwise restricted in that area.
