On the Westside there are Whole Foods, Fairway, Westside Markets, etc. On the upper eastside, nothing like that. Will there be some in the near future? The Gristedes is one of the few but how come it is always so cold in there? Bad prices and very limited selections.

No room for big markets in UES.

For better prices and selections, go to 125th street Pathmark in Harlem, also Costco in East River Plaza.

Whole Foods is building one at 250 East 57th St. I guess that is considered midtown rather than UES.

250 East 57th Street : Curbed NY

How about opening a J-Mart in the UES? I bet that would be most welcome there.

AMEN,

These goddamn little, overpriced, over squashed bodega type markets are a pain in the ass. Food Emporium, a glorified A&P sets priced like it is halfway between Tiffany's and Van Cleef and Arpels.
The best is KEY FOOD but wow, that sets a new low definitional standard for the word "best."
Gristedes...you'd think they were selling nectar and ambrosia to the gods instead of milk and eggs.

Not that it could ever happen but I PRAY for a SHOPRITE!

If I were a Park Avenue matron clipping coupons for the bonds hubby left me, I wouldn't complain but I'm NOT.

For staples, my current best idea is COSTCO a quick ride up First Avenue. Milk, $2.99 a gallon, BIG roasted chickens, $4.99...Extra-Large eggs about a dime apiece. Big croissants $6 a dozen.

And remember that you have Target in the same shopping complex as CostCo, which also carries food and other household items.

Personally, I think my neighborhood, upper Harlem, is underserved. Or at least, that's the impression that I get from going to the Pathmark down the street from me. That place is packed nearly anytime that I've been in there, and I've gone on just about every day and time imaginable, except weekdays during work hours.

I can understand the lines at Trader Joe's, but Pathmark?

Not with the current UESers, maybe when the neighborhood skews younger, but the current set would be damned before a big brand name store places itself alongside their doorman buildings.

The Target and the Costco are in the Mall-ette at 117th and the East River...2 blocks East of First Ave. It's a quick ride North because 116th is a Select Bus stop.
One can grab a slice of Pizza at Patsy's afterward before heading South.

The things Costco HAS are quite reasonable, you cannot beat their prices for dairy, but it is definitely not a Supermarket.

I will see if I can figure an easy way up to that PATHMARK.
