If so, where? Any decent neighborhoods left???

Lately, the rental market in NYC seems to have gone even crazier than before! My friend is now looking; she will be a grad student at NYU. She REALLY wants to be in Manhattan over Queens or Brooklyn, but can't go over her budget by much. The places I used to rent in Manhattan for $1500-2000 a couple of years ago are now in the range of $2500-2700, with no vacancies.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Sure, if you want to live on the UES east of second avenue, you may be able to find a walkup studio for around $1,800. It will be very small.

Don't forget about the brokers fee of 15% of the annual rent as well as the competition for apartments anywhere in the 5 boros.

If by Manhattan, you mean anywhere on the Island, sure. If by Manhattan you mean somewhere below 96th street, nothing very close to the subway.

Although, I have a friend who has a one bedroom in the heart of the UWS - 70s, right off Broadway. She pays 2000 a month. You can find these kind of deals, but it is hard to do from a distance.

Good luck to your friend.
