I've been checking out craigslist off and on for a while and have noticed that lately rent seems to have gone up drastically in these areas. Has it become normal to pay $1,500 for a studio in Sunnyside, Woodside, or Jackson Heights? I am definitely going to consult a realtor. Still, I would also like to continue to see what is listed online in preparation for a three day weekend in NYC at the end of this month. I want to know what is par for the course lately, or what is reasonable. Are there any good websites with current apartment listings I could check out? Any feedback or suggestions would be great. Thank you.

I believe you can still find a small one bedroom (basement?) apt. in Jackson Heights for $1000-$1200 a month.

Not sure the rents there were ever really that low to begin with.It wouldn't make sense.
NY real estate is a finely tuned market and there are few anomalies. Generally, every factor you can imagine is already built into the price including the fact that prices will vary on identical apartments in different buildings in the same neighborhood if one is 2 blocks from the subway and the other is 5 blocks from the subway. The closer one will have the higher price.
One of the biggest overriding factors of all is proximity to midtown on the subway. All else being equal,a neighborhood that is 15 minutes from midtown on the subway will be noticeably more expensive than a neighborhood that is 30 or 35 minutes away.If those neighborhoods( Jackson Heights,Sunnyside,Woodside) actually had a lot of apartments under 1,000/mo it would mean that the rents in those neighborhoods were the same as comparable neighborhoods in Brooklyn and The Bronx that are twice as far (30 or 35 mins instead of 15) from midtown. It just wouldn't make sense.
Decent NYC neighborhoods that actually have a real supply of livable, under 1,000/mo apartments are not 15 minutes from midtown.
My guess is that in general the low end for a decent apartment in those neighborhoods was and is at least 1,200/mo,maybe more.Still a bargain by NY standards for sure but nowhere near 900 or whatever. That is just totally unrealistic. If there is anything much lower it's because there is a problem or something undesirable about it.

Thanks, folks. This is very close to what I thought. For a while there, though, there were apartments listed in these neighborhoods at very low rents. Had to be a catch. I will keep looking and being realistic.

I think for a while into the recession rents in those places did drop a bit, but now they seem to be back up again.
