Maybe ask your parents? Isn't this kind of thing why people keep those pesky things around?

Get on the phone. Make a half dozen calls to a half dozen different automobile insurance agents and request a rate quote.

A bunch of strangers on the internet cannot even begin to estimate what your insurance bill would be.

Hmmm...let's see...calling insurance agents to get insurance rates. Who would've imagined? This thread is another sterling example of internet-soaked kids who cannot think for themselves.

Check this out for an example of old-fashioned...

When I was a teenager, my parents bought a house in the suburbs of New Jersey. I hated it; vowed to move back to the city--which I did after I got my first job out of college.

I chose a neighborhood convenient to the subway, then went to the station agent (although they were still called token clerks in those days) and got a subway map. Learned the system by myself, without the aid of a hand-held electronic doodad.

And when I was in school, I knew how to write an report--using words I knew how to spell correctly--by doing research in an actual library. Them days are gone!

Not sure if this will help, but get prepared to get screwed. Insurance rates in NYC, especially for a 21 year old, are high. It is high for even those with a clean driving record, which I pray you have since you are a new driver. So lets add up the factors that will not be in your favor:

1 - new driver: you will pay the highest rates;

2 - never had insurance and currently do not have insurance: you will be thrown into the assigned risk pool (the pool for new new drivers and those who currently do not have insurance), which btw has the highest rates;

3 - your age and martial status (I assume you are single): you will pay high rates because you are young; and

4 - a newer car will more than likely require full coverage.

If I was you I'd take the bus and/or train if I could. I know the pressure of having a vehicle at 21 because I was once there. But I would seriously think about holding off or at least getting a hoop-ride that requires only liability coverage.
