I play on getting my lisense in the next few months
I basically plan on buying the crappiest car I can find as I doubt Ill drove more than a few thousand miles on the year (Ill only need it a few times a month)
I cant search in any of these online insurance places since they ask for car make and drivers lisense number which i dont have yet
What is the cheapest that I should be able to get insuarance for (im a 25 year old male) on a worthless car?
ill pretty much need it on weekends, but ill never be driving it great distances, a rental or cabs would end up costing more and be a lot more inconvinient
A rental or temp (zipcar) would probably end up costing you *less*. You should figure it out yourself. For instance, Zipcar for a day I think is $58 - $70 (here in Boston). You can get rental deals for $30-$50 a day without much trouble.
car rentals here in ny are very pricy, but insurance for new drivers is crazy for the first 6 six months. I have got quotes of 700-900 a month if I was using a new car.
A car in NYC is more of a bother than a convenience.
You can go to one of the outer boros or even out to Nassau County to rent a car and it would be much cheaper. Check out Budget Rent A Car or Enterprise.
If you own a car in NYC, you always have to worry about parking, getting towed, getting tickets, etc. And insurance in NYC is very expensive, even if you're driving an old clunker. The fact that you're a new driver won't help either.
If you still want to buy a car, check out InsWeb (google it). They can shop you around and see what kind of rates they can get for you. If you call and give them an idea of what kind of car, etc. they can probably give you a ballpark figure.
