i heard astoria being better than bushwick brooklyn. im looking for a place where the train station is nearby so i can go to union square, a place in astoria to live where i can find a singles scene, nightlife, clubs, lounges, musuem, artistic scene, mix crowd. what areas in astoria do you recommend i should move to?

from what i read, seems like astoria is more of a family place compared to singles scene with nightlife.

! I have easy access to astoria from Mott Haven in the Bronx and I really enjoy the nightlife in astoria. 30 avenue has alot of bars, cafes and lounges. There is a couple of hookah spots on steinway. Near Hoyt street under the N elevated line I came across a night club that was popping and it was pack with alot of transplants like yourselfs, locals from Astoria and natives like me.

Get on the subway or taxi to Manhattan like all the rest.

Transplant nightlife in Astoria is limited. There are lots of nightspots, but most are for immigrant locals of varying heritage and generations. Euro/Eastern European immigrant culture dominates. Transplants rarely mix. There's one bar on 34th St off 30th Ave, forget name. It's hopping most nights as its the ONLY post college Transplant drinking spot. There are a few restaurants aimed at Transplants. An organic burger joint on 31st Ave at 34th St, that's hot, as well as a few others.

Other than that most Transplants jump into cabs and head into Manhattan or to Greenpoin/Williamsburg. Astoria is an affordable area with many Transplants, but it is not a Transplant neighborhood and is not dominated with their lifestyle. Other neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Manhattan are more Transplant centric.

That said, on an odd night when one feels like staying close to home, there are a handful of spots to hang. Though true Transplant/American nightlife is focused outside the neighborhood. This is specifically so if live music/bands is what you're into. Other than the very odd circumstance, live music isn't happening in Astoria. For that, Greenpoint/Williamsburg, Lower East Side, and Manhattan in general.

Astoria nightlife is VERY much a European 'Sidewalk Cafe' thing. 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants, young and old, eat, drink and mix in a very Euro-American fashion. Lots of people profiling their American succes, bright shiny automobiles on display out front. Guys cruising around the area in hopped up sports cars, Ferraris, Lambourghinis, and the requisite BMWs and Audis.

That's the scene, not one truly congruent with the average Transplant/Hipster sensibility. The advantage to Asoria, is that its cheap, safe, and with easy quick commute to Manhattan.
