The 5 train runs to Manhattan (from Morris Park) from 5:30 AM to 6 AM via Bronx Local, then from 6 to 9 AM via Bronx Express. You can catch an Express 5 train from either White Plains Road or the Esplanade Avenue forks. They divide up the 5 trains evenly, alternating them.

5 trains run via Bronx Local all day until about 4PM (3:30-3:50ish from Brooklyn of Manhattan).

From 4 to 7:45... 5 trains run via Bronx Express,
And between 4:30 and 6:00... additional Bronx Express trains run via White Plains Road to Neried Avenue, again alternating as in the morning.

The BxM10 Morris Park Express Bus is a good option for avoiding the rush hour madness. It will take an hour regardless to get into the city so if you have the means of taking the BxM10 from Morris Park or the BxM11 from Pelham Parkway (I wouldn't suggest because of Bronx River Parkway traffic being much heavier than Bruckner Expressway traffic).

5 trains do not run to Manhattan after 9:45 PM. Trains run every 15 minutes, then every 20 after 1 AM, to East 180th Street where you can transfer to the 2 train.
5 trains do not run to Morris Park from Manhattan after 11:00 PM. They run shuttle between East 180th Street & Morris Park Avenue to Eastchester.

For travel during the East Bronx only hours, you can take the 2 train to East 180th Street and transfer to the Bx21 bus which travels along the entire Morris Park town via Morris Park Avenue to Westchester Square.
You can also of course transfer to the 5 train from East 180th Street.
The 6 train is also an option. Take the 6 train from Manhattan to Westchester Square and take the Mott Haven bound Bx21 bus which crosses the entire Morris Park. You can also get off the 6 at Pelham Bay Park and take the Bx12 bus from Pelham Bay Station to Pelham Parkway stops. The 2 train also offers Bx12 service, or of course you could walk.

I suggest the BxM10 bus for all PM Rush and Evening travel. It's not congested, it's not difficult, and if you learn the schedule, it's much more convenient. Morris Park is too suburban for train travel. Train riders along the 5 train are nothing like Morris Park residents, and you will most likely feel out of place and congested.

BxM10 PM Rush schedule is convenient, and will be a smoother ride than fighting for a spot on the 5 train, which isn't feasible anymore due to the overpopulation of the Lexington Avenue Line in Manhattan and the Pelham Line (6)<6>, Bronx Line (2)(5), and the Jerome Avenue Line (4) in The Bronx.

BxM10 Evening service is much more limiting, one every half hour, than every hour, but is the most consistent of all the Bronx Express Buses, running until 12:15 AM each night, later than the last 5 train, arriving at Morris Park around 1:00 to 1:20 AM. The BxM11 is a good alternative for Evening service as well, running until midnight as well, increasing options. Nearby BxM8 Pelham Bay Express Bus service serves all Manhattan BxM10 stops and has a 1:10 AM bus from Manhattan incase you stay out a little later, leaving you at Pelham Bay Station with a connection to the Bx12 bus.

Getting around Morris Park isn't spontaneous like the city. It has to be treated like the suburb it is, because travel takes planning. The trains are constantly undergoing construction, making the already questionable train service scarce. But if you plan and figure out your routine, you will figure out how you like to do things, and if you do figure it out, Morris Park is the kind of town you'll want to move to.

I commute to the Morris Park area on weekends, and I often see that the subway is knocked out, which explains why many residents use the BxM10 express bus. It is usually much faster to use that on weekends, even if the schedule is only every 30 minutes to an hour. The buses are on-time, quiet and the clientele that ride won't leave you concerned for your safety. For what it's worth, many women use the express bus, as it is safer than the subway and a MUCH cleaner ride. Learn the schedule and work around it. If you can get used to that and budget extra time during the week, it would be worth it. There is a weekly pass that can be used 7 days a week on the express bus, the city bus and the subway. It costs $55 or thereabout, but it's only slightly more expensive than the regular weekly pass.
