Hi! I'm moving to NYC in August and will be working on midtown on 52nd between 5th and 6th. I'm married with a newborn and would like to live in a great neighborhood with a very quick commute. We need a 2 bedroom apartment with a max rent of $2500 per month. I'm open to living in any of the boroughs or manhattan as long as the commute is fast. Where should we live? Thanks!

Could you define "fast"?

You could live in Brooklyn and take the B/D train to 7th avenue and West 53rd street or live in Queens with the E/M trains at 5th avenue and 53rd street.

The E train also goes to 7th Avenue & West 53rd Street (stop after 5th Ave & 53rd Street coming from Queens).

Yes, as Blue387 pointed out, you have to define 'fast.' If you lived in Fort Tryon (a perfectly wonderful neighborhood) in northern Manhattan, you could take the A express and get to Columbus Circle in 20 minutes or less. The subway commute to midtown Manhattan from half of Brooklyn and a lot of Queens wouldn't take you more than 35 minutes.

By fast I mean twenty minutes or less. Does this rule out all of the boroughs? Is it unrealistic to aim for a nice 2 bedroom in a safe part of manhattan? Thanks!

I would not rule out looking in Midtown. You're most likely looking at a small 2br or a 1br convertible to 2br in a walk-up/no doorman building, but check East Midtown (50's and upper 40's east of Lex). That will be about a 20 min walk to your office.

Other than that, a 20 minute commute is unrealistic. You'd have to live within a block of a subway stop because you're going to have to walk from 51st & Lex (6 train to up/downtown east side) which is about an 8 minute walk or 53rd & 5th (E train to west side/downtown) which is a 2-3 min walk. The apartments you will find within a block of the subway stops are at a premium and would knock you out of some neighborhoods you could otherwise afford to live in if you tolerated a 30-40 min commute (Upper East Side- east of Lex, Murray Hill, Lower East Side, etc).

No, of course it's not unrealistic. But when you narrow your scope that much, just keep in mind that you'll be making a major tradeoff: more money for the shorter commute. If you think you could survive, let's say, a 35-minute commute, you'd find your list of options expanded greatly.

Astoria, LIC and or Woodside are going to be your best bet! I don't know how old your child is but you will probably want to send your child to private. You will definitely find something nice in that price range LIC has beautiful apts for that price - I lived in woodside on the jackson hts/Astoria border and door to door it was 25minutes to work and I worked on 57th and Madison - took the V to 53rd and 5th. Great commute!
