We would like to live in New York City, in the Chelsea Clinton(my husband has to commute to Morristown) area. Would it be possible to drive to White PLains(the only german school is there), at 7.30 and driving back at 8.30 to NYC?. And then at afternoon going to WP at 1 o´clock once again and going back to New York City. I know it sounds crazy, but we would really like to live in NYC. In Google Maps it says it would take 36 minutes (1hour with traffic)...
Or would the problem be the parking space (2 cars)?

36 minutes from Chelsea to or from White Plains is a theory that has probably never been proven.
When they say "with no traffic" they must literally mean 2:00 a.m. Almost anytime between 6:00 or 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m the trip is going to take close to or more than the hour..maybe much more.

2 round trips a day is likely to translate to at least 3 or 4 hours in a car so I would say it's crazy.

Don't know exactly what you mean by "the only German school" and why it should rule your life so but don't they have classes in German at the U.N. school ?

That is, in my opinion, INSANE. Not only will you be LIVING in the car, but unless you like driving around midtown Manhattan, you'll need to pay for TWO garage spaces, which, in Manhattan, START at around $400/month. PLUS you'll get to pay NYC income tax. And that commute to Morristown is no prize.... You'd be MUCH better off living elsewhere. It's really not worth it. As Mick Jagger so appropriately put it, 'You can't always get what you want.'

youre probably better off taking the metronorth because the train is only half hour way from nyc and there is usually no traffic
with a car white plains is inconvenient because you have to take atleast two highways to get from nyc to white plains during the AM rush

You don't understand: the KIDS need to go to a German school in White Plains. But the father is going to be working in Morristown: HE drops the kids off, then starts off to Morristown and then later in the day Mother schleps up to White Plains to pick up the kids. The school isn't at the train station. The train isn't a possibility with this insane plan.

I know there's a big German community in White Plains because of this German school you are talking about. I think that's the Rosedale section of White Plains? Anyway, it sounds like you have a child that needs to go to that school, so you need to be his school bus, and your husband needs to commute to Morristown. So geographically, you are thinking NYC is right in the middle, plus you get to experience the "city life" (which is over rated anyway)

I think I see what you are thinking, but I think the better choice might be (if the school in White Plains is a must) is to live in White Plains or somewhere close to the Tappan Zee Bridge and have your husband suffer thru the Westchester to NJ commute, rather than you suffer the NYC to White Plains drive twice a day.

Or someplace in the city on the edge of Westchester, like Riverdale in the Bronx. It's much easier to park up there. Paying to park two cars plus rent in Chelsea would be extremely expensive.

There's a large amount of traffic in the general White Plains area, so thirty-six minutes is just not going to be anywhere near accurate. Even an hour could be cutting it close. The other thing to factor is that not all buildings have parking in them, so you have to walk to the car, which adds to the commute, and you need to let the valet know what time to have the car ready. It's possible, but realistically, it's a huge hassle, and the trip can exceed two hours in bad traffic and/or inclement weather.

It's also a long trek to get to Morristown from White Plains, easily an hour without traffic, and some portions of the route do have traffic considerations, so an hour and a half would be the minimum expected drive time. So, the morning commute for your husband would be nearly three hours and cover nearly 100 miles (depending upon routes chosen) just to get from Manhattan to Morristown via White Plains. In fact, he would be better off heading across the Tappan Zee than trying to navigate the inbound traffic to Manhattan and then go to NJ, which is a longer distance, but the traffic may not be as bad, though on a foggy, rainy, snowy morning, the Tappan Zee will have speed reductions that creates a traffic situation from Westchester to Rockland.

The evening commute back from NJ can take just as long, but that's due to delays at the Hudson Crossings that crop up, so the bridges/tunnels can be jammed, taking an hour or more to navigate. While Morristown to Westchester is not ideal, either, at least it can be mitigated by using the Tappan Zee, which can be slow, but not stopped, headed from Rockland to Westchester in the evening rush, since the majority of traffic is headed from Westchester to Rockland at that hour.

You should check with the school and see if there are other families in Manhattan with whom you can carpool. Even one or two families would make a big difference.

yeah you can run into a good deal of german expats in White Plains, The German School is one of the few German High schools that exist in the country where students can earn their abitur.
