I thought you made mostly good points. But don't be surprised if some people disagree, and some even take offense.

For the record, I don't think NM has much of a reputation of any sort, because a lot of people in the US don't even know it exists.
Or they think it is in Mexico.

As an avid college basketball fan in Ohio (Dayton Flyers fan) I can say that New Mexico has an excellent reputation in college basketball circles. The University of New Mexico Lobos are an excellent program and are well known for their large and rabid fan base. The "Pit" (so-called because of the large pit that had to be excavated during construction...much of the arena is below ground level) is considered to be one of the most difficult places in the country for a visiting team to travel to and emerge victorious.

It's not, if you like living alone in the middle of nowhere. But most people don't, as demonstrated by the fact that most people live in big cities or suburbs. Point is, I could say anything and you could claim it was not a negative if you personally didn't mind. Like I could say "periodically, they drop nuclear bombs on the people in New Mexico" and you could say "I moved here specifically because I enjoy fallout." OK. But that's you. The question asked was "why does New Mexico have a bad reputation," which means "to people in general."

Right, but that would rule out 99% of New Mexico (anything not Albuquerque or possibly Las Cruces) for most people. You'd be surprised at how many people require the "big box stores" (even if they don't actually set foot in them) or "more than chain restaurants." But on the other hand, I know people who live in rural country and they consider a Dollar General to be amazing like "we're so fortunate!" I think if you asked most people in America if they wanted to live in Ruidoso, they'd say no to even visiting it. (I've never been there, so I wouldn't know off hand, but I don't really have an urge to go there.)

NM was actually tied for first (with Texas) for teen birthrate in 2005, and has now dropped to 7th. The rate has declined by more than half. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/s...teenbirths.htm

But then why the long winded diatribes? Why would you obsess so over its reputation? Very ODD!! I hope you and others who believe as you do never do visit! Ruidoso has no problem attracting hoards of tourists and people with enough money to build thousands of 2nd homes they rarely use.

Wow, Ruidoso sounds amazing. People come there just to build houses and then leave immediately, never to return. You heard it here first.

We have a Walmart, Burkes, Bealls, Sears, Big 5, Foxworth, to name a few. Home Depot and Lowes are down the hill (~45min). And scores of non-chain stores and restaurants. Believe it or not a lot of people travel here from big cities to shop at the unique stores. The town will be packed this weekend.

Plus 8 golf courses (or is it 9?), a ski resort, a famous horse race track, a few casinos (one actually nice), etc.

rruff is right! My family goes to Ruidoso for a week every Summer, as do a lot of us Texans. It's our favorite place to go for a quiet, relaxing week away in a place of beauty. We love Ruidoso! And the shopping there is wonderful, btw.
