Depends on which street. Safety around there is so/so IMHO but I think you would be OK since you are married w/kid and probably aren't lingering around too much on your own late night. I was going to buy a house there (didn't get it) so I thought it was safe enough. I'm not out late at night alone (married also) too much so I felt fine about that area.

There def has been issues down there here and there though but that's prob gonna be anywhere in JC that you live.

Thanks for the reply. As far as I researched It looks fine if u stay west of central ave.But definitely walk from congress street alone at night times looks scary. When I looked at the zip code 07307 in city-data eventhough it is not great it is okay. I really got scared after reading all the forums on jersey heights and thought I should head to princeton and commute to NYC.

It's not super safe... that said it is not dreadful. But I grew up not too far from there and it's not a terrific area. Petty crime and some daily annoyances that are part of city life can be expected (vandalism/car damage/break ins, etc.) depends on what your tolerance level is.

If you live W of Kennedy you should be fine. I live 1 1/2 blocks off kennedy but a few below Congress (toward J Square) and I feel perfectly safe and haven't had any problems.

Our street is quiet at night and no problems with the neighbors.

This forum doesn't really have a good opinion of urban areas in general, but they are especially brutal with JC.

I totally agree with this. It's your basic Urban living environment.

I lived in JC heights..I bought which was a mistake. Should have rented first. Its OK, but not safe overall. Always got to be on your toes. Is that something you want to deal with all the time? Not me. Rent first to check out. I chose JC for the commute, but really I learned afterwards living somewhere nicer/safer takes priority over commuting distance.

Does living near a train station mean much anymore?
Wasn't there a commuter who was recently murdered at a JC train station?
