When we built our home in 1970 we put in a well, cost us $500 went down and hit water almost immediately, in Vernon NJ and the place was hilly and lots of rock, but hubby said drill by a tree and you'll get all the water you want, drilled right next to that big ole tree and here came the water. Only had one problem in 27 yrs and that was the electrical wire broke and our water tasted just fine, no bottled water for us, but here in FL I can't drink the water here, its Sam's Clear favored water every day.

I believe only one section of Vernon has public water and its actually a private well that serves 20 houses or such on Rt. 94, Baldwin Estates.

I don't think alot of people know exactly where their water comes from...public /city water is water treated with chemicals to get rid of the chemicals!!! Or from wells. I strongly suggest that people check out that website I posted previously...you may be surprised at what's being dumped in your drinking water..you may even find your neighbor's house on there! Or the local factory down the road..or your favorite little gas station...Very interesting website.

Default well water testing?

We moved to Chester (NJ) a month ago. We used to live in South Orange (NJ) and the tap water tasted and smelled SO bad - it was municipal. Our well water tastes and smells fine. We have a softener. The water was tested as part of our inspection but I still feel uneasy about it.

How often should we test our well water? Are there home kits or should we hire someone? I assume we need to test for bacteria, minerals, chemicals, radiation - what else?

I believe only the drinking water that goes to the fridge is filtered. What are some of the better full home filtration systems out there?

What about the carcinogen byproducts of using chlorine to disinfect city water?Sure the municipality is tested and kept at a "safe level" but it still just doesn't sit well with me. And if there's enough chlorine added to kill all the harmful bacteria....what does that do for the natural occurring healthy bacteria in our guts that actually have a function to aide in digestion?

Same in Howell - public water is better there
Well water gets contaminated too easily. I would never rely on only having a well.
