My wife and I are considering relocating from the DC-area to Central/Northern NJ so that we can live near family. I grew up in Marlboro and have family there and in Madison. Her sister lives in South Orange. We have a 19-month old son.

Anyway, we are looking for information about school districts in Central/Northern NJ. Particularly, we are interested in learning which towns/districts have the best schools. I have a general familiarity with this area from growing up in Central Jersey, but am looking for a resource, publication, website, etc., that gives a general overview. Any leads would be helpful. Thanks.

You can check out several written school publications with school stats. 1) Star Ledger Newspaper prints all NJ school stats annually,2) New Jersey Monthly Magazine prints a special school editition every 2 or 3 years in their September edition, 3) the NJ state website: NJgov.net has every NJ school report cards with test scores etc.,4)greatschools.net website, and 5) newjersey.privateschoolsreport.com for private schools. Obviously your son is only 19 months old and some schools rankings change often, so I would stick to schools who have consistently ranked well over the years and change very little. I live in Basking Ridge, and Newsweek ranked the top 100 High Schools in America and only 2 NJ High Schools schools ranked in the top 100. McNair Academy in Jersey City, and Ridge High in Bernards Twp. Madison has been going through lots of changes in the past several years and I would look into Summit(Northside), Millburn, Chatham, Warren, Basking Ridge, and Livingston. These areas are very good areas to look into if looking to live in the Madison area. Good Luck and welcome back to NJ.

NJ Dept. of Education School Reports

From there, choose the county you want, then the school district. You can even get to the specific school if you want it.

This is objective data, not opinions. To some people, one set of data, like test scores, is important. To others, classroom size will be more important. So there are no rankings or opinions here. Interpret the data as you will. Good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like these sites give plenty of stats/grades on individual schools and districts. Anything out there that would help compare districts with other districts?

Try schooldigger.com

Rankings can be a little deceiving because you may have certain schools omit certain info. As far as central NJ, I have been doing tons of research and speaking with many parents and teachers and Colts Neck is my top choice. The teacher tenure is long term, everyone at the schools are so friendly and helpful and their gifted program is in partnership with Princeton. Town is more affluent then most in the county but not "flashy" as most other neighboring towns are. Rumson is also a top choice.

Thanks. I was hoping to find something that compares school districts with other school districts. I think these sites just provide rankings and stats for individual schools. But I appreciate the leads.

As an aside, check out the Charter schools. Our kids go to one in Warren County that is newer and still evolving, but has its charms. Outdoor education and smaller classes make it a better choice for our family.

Check it out at Untitled Document

Good Luck!

You can compare up to 5 schools on greatschools.net. Just save them into your "saved schools" and click compare.
