i recently took a job in manhattan and have been looking at the jersey suburbs for homes in the short hills, morristown, and princeton areas. young family, 5 and 7 year old so schools are crucial, 500-600K price range, etc.
question is, does anyone know if there are any towns that NJ transit has plans in the near future to add an express line to? for example, we are leaning towards princeton area because you get more for your money and schools are better, but really lie morristown and some other places as well. problem is the lines are a little over an hour from some of these.
if there are near future plans to add express lines from any cities that could help open new areas to us.
Morristown and Princeton both have train service to NYC, but I doubt very highly you'll ever see what you're calling an "express line"- the tracks have been in place for many, many years, and there's no way you could ever run a new line anywhere through NJ. So, you're pretty much stuck with the lines as they are, and the commute times that exist currently.
let me clarify, not an express line as much as an express train that bypasses all the local stops.
for example, princeton is 50 miles out and the local train to get into NY takes about 75 minutes or so, but they also have a lot of express trains that bypass some of the local stops and get in around 55 minutes.
just wondering if there are any known plans for additional towns to add express routes to NY.
The expresses run on the Northeast Corridor, and there are several variations of them which offer different combinations of select stops. The Morris & Essex lines do not have expresses because while the NE Corridor has (at least) 4 tracks, the M&E has 2.
The towns which will have greatly improved rail service in the next "few" years (few meaning 10-12'ish) are the towns on the Main, Bergen, and Pascack Valley Lines which will have Midtown Direct services after the ARC project is finished (it has yet to begin).
Check out Maplewood/South Orange it is a great place to live and you will find a lot of houses in your price range. It is on the Midtown Direct, short commute into the city.
They have plans to add a line to Northwest Jersey - Blairstown, Andover but I believe it's being held up by Sparta Twp as they do not want a train coming through their township. This line would be a huge improvement out this way. Currently, the train in Hackettstown has way too many stops and the ride is about 2 hrs. from what others have told me. Someone recently posted an article on this line plus my neighbor works for transit so I will ask him today where future direct lines are anticipated.
