I commute from Netherwood to NY Penn and am quite tired of dealing with the Amtrak/NJ Transit antics with switch problems, tunnel issues, etc. Is there a simplier way and more reliable, such as taking the path train?
The PATH train from Newark Penn goes to World Trade Center. You can switch at Journal Square to get to Midtown, 33rd and 6th. Or you can switch at Newark Penn for a Hoboken train and take the PATH from there. Either way it's two transfers.
Yeah I need to get to 33rd in Manhattan. Just curious if its quicker and cheaper going the Path route or staying with NJ Transit. Right now Im paying close to $300 for a monthly pass.
Taking PATH from Newark Penn to Herald Square (close to Penn Station NY) is perhaps more reliable, but it is a slow journey.
15 min, Newark to Journal Square
5 min wait
25 min, Journal Square to 33rd St
45 min total. By comparison, NJT schedules 25 min from Newark to NY Penn. Also, PATH is very crowded during rush hour, so hope you don't mind standing in a sardine can. And PATH has its own share of signal/car equipment/police activity problems that cause delays several times per week. Subscribe to PATH alerts to have those advisories emailed to you.
It is true that PATH is cheaper, though. 30-day unlimited NJT from Netherwood to Newark-Penn and a 30-day PATH unlimited is $168 + $80 = $248, against $284 for a 30-day unlimited NJT from Netherwood to New York-Penn. Up to you whether you think $36 a month is worth the longer trip via PATH.
Also depends where work is in NYC. The PATH may be faster if your job is closer to one of the PATH stops than it is to New York-Penn.
need to get to 33rd in Manhattan. ... quicker ... Path route or staying with NJT?

"One weekday morning inbound train continues to Hoboken Terminal"
Could you take this one train, then the PATH from HOB to 33? NJT Trip Planner
Depart : NETHERWOOD at 5:33 AM Board : Train 2406 toward HOBOKEN
Arrive : HOBOKEN at 6:29 AM Fare Regular $6.00
Or, is 5:30 AM too early for you?

The only train via the Raritan Line directly to Hoboken departs Netherwood at 5:33 am and arrives in Hoboken at 6:29 am. Way too early for most people. Also, the monthly price is the same as Netherwood-New York Penn, so it would be more expensive rather than cheaper.

Actually, the fare to Newark is the same as the fare to Hoboken, as long as you take a direct train (not one involving a transfer at Secaucus): http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0060.pdf
Also, FWIW, there's direct trains on the North Jersey Coast Line that run into Hoboken. They leave Newark Penn at 7:06, 7:44, and 8:48, arriving in Hoboken 22 minutes later: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0080.pdf Though since they use NE Corridor trackage, they might not be much more reliable than the regular trains to NY Penn.
