The trains take a long time because there are so many stops. Your best bet would be to commute to Hoboken and take the PATH from there (it only costs $1.50). The parking in Hoboken can be hellish, but I'd rather do that than the hour+ train or bus ride.
You would think being up here, closer to NYC, would make the commute shorter. Wrong!
I grew up in WML and for my first year out of college I commuted from Mom and Dad's house to Manhattan by the Lakeland Bus. I drove to the bus depot in Dover and rode the whole way in. At that time (this is almost 10 years ago now) there was an express bus that took about an hour and change that made limited stops. You should Google Lakeland and see what times the express buses are. Back then, there was no charge to park but that may have changed... just another question to ask.
Another thing to consider is how you will get home. I remember that between 5 and 6:30 pm or so, there were buses out of Port Authority that left every 10-15 minutes. However, if I had to work late (and often did -- crazy boss - but that's another story) and left at 7 pm or later, the buses weren't as frequent.
Good luck and enjoy WML! It was a great place to grow up.
