My friend currently lives in DC and has found a job in Newark. Where are safe fun places to live for a single?

Hoboken is out since the traffic will be tough to handle and cost astronomical. Looking for other options.
Already considered Newport Pavonia but ruled out due to the same reasons as Hoboken.

Don't want to live more than 15 mins away, preferable on light rail route and need a safe, happening place.

Thanks for all your suggestions

Express train from Princeton Jct is 40 mins. So you can really live anywhere. My impression of Newark is a 3rd world city, can't understand why Prudential hasn't move out of there yet.
But anyway, you could reverse commute from Manhattan if you want the "city" experience, i.e. high cost, crime, young people etc. Or you can get that in NJ in Jersey City, Hoboken etc.

What an Ignorant thing to say....have you even visited Newark recently? Hipsters have started moving into the Downtown and Ironbound... Prudential the company is building 3 new high rises and expanding its workforce along with Cablevision , a panasonic , PSE&G and several smaller tech start up companies... Not all Urban Areas have high crime , most of Jersey City has barely any violent crime , same with Hoboken and Manhattan...but you being trapped in the suburban mindset wouldn't know that.

You have Newark itself , the Ironbound is has very little crime and seems to becoming hip , the rents are still low...for now , then theres Downtown Newark there are few places , also look into Forest Hill...which is along the Newark Light Rail.

Harrison , Kearny and North Arlington have bus service to Newark , lower part of Harrison has Rail Service to Newark although bus Service might be your better option.

Journal SQ has PATH service to Newark

Then along the Northeast Corridor you have , Linden , Rahway about 20mins from Newark Penn Station

Along the Morris&Essex Network look around the South Orange , Bloomfield , and Montclair all are 10-15mins from Newark Broad Street Station

Cranford , Roselle Park , Westfield along the Raritan Valley line are 15-20mins from Newark Penn Station

The only light rails are the City Subway to Bloomfield & the PATH to Harrison & Jersey City.

In which part of Newark is the new job? There are 2 major train stations in Newark, a product of the era when multiple rail lines competed with each other.
Penn Station is the main one, with links to several rail lines. Amtrak runs to DC!

New Jersey Transit
The Broad Street or Lackawanna Station is the other.
