I realize that nobody has a crystal ball, but would love to hear from the current residents of PA about its future prospects.

For a city of its size, burglaries, robberies, and violent crime in the past 2-3 years do not seem to be that bad--is that continuing trend? Have the revitalization efforts (other than the proposed new train station) pretty much ended with the recession? Is the Hispanic population still growing, or are there signs that minorities (including whites) will sooner or later "discover" PA?

The future of Perth Amboy....Dismal.

I have lived in the area for many years...

They have been "revitalizing" Perth Amboy since at least the 1970's.

Soooo, how do you like the progress they have made so far...It's only taken 40 years to get this far.

I have lived in Perth Amboy all my life. and I can say it has gotten better. I walk around at 2 AM no Burglaries, no muggings, no beatings. Also I left the door unlocked once by mistake nothing happened. Not encouraging anyone to not take precaution. but Perth Amboy is safe.

It is mostly Hispanic. But that is changing a bit with Federal Hill and Harbortown Sail. Harbortown is the most diverse section in Perth Amboy with equal amounts of Whites, Blacks, and Hispanics. there are also some Asians.

Also there is an Asian Indian enclave in Iselin on Oak Tree Road not too far. A lot of the shoppers in Smith Street are Muslims, Indians, etc. Even whites come here.

I noticed that unlike other ethnic groups that used to live here, Hispanic families are staying here and when they save up instead of moving out they remodel their houses. Some look quite great. They are even building new houses in Perth Amboy too. Many Hispanic professionals are choosing to live here although many professionals who used to live in Perth Amboy move out to other places.

As far as redevlopment the reason why Perth Amboy is not redeveloping is because we are in debt. The Public Safety youth complex on new brunswick avenue cost us 90 million in debt. We have a mayor that's trying to fix that.

Water Street down by the shore has some really nice homes, some with ocean views, and relatively cheap too (partly why I asked about PA in the first place). I'm guessing private school is the only option for kids though? Is there any gang activity within the city?

Yeah the schools are bad but there are plenty of choices for private school. gang activity some but not as bad as Newark and Camden. gangs really don't harass you if you're not in a rival gang or doing something like that. and for the most part keep to themselves. It's not like other communities where you have innocent people getting killed.

that's good to hear, thanks a lot for the info! with a single (and somewhat modest) paycheck, our options are rather limited. I'll be working in New Brunswick, so the first place we looked was actually Highland Park. Sadly there isn't a lot available there under 400k right now. Since we want a town where we can walk to restaurants, the train to the city, and some shopping, Somerville and PA appear to be good bets. Somerville seems to be a little nicer than PA, but PA has the ocean views which we really like

That is actually the Hudson River, not the ocean. There is a ferry there that goes into Tottenville, which is part of Staten Island. They have been doing a lot in Amboy in recent years. It is definitely on the upswing.

As for Highland Park, it is very expensive. Less than $400K will put you in a small shack on the south side or in the "triangle".
