Another great spot for pictures is Boulevard East in Weehawken. I forget what the cross streets are called but you get google Charritos in Weehawken as a starting point. the views are great and there's aloways a ton of people both amatuer and professional taking pictures there. It's great at sunset too.
+1 on these suggestions. Across the river will Midtown with Hell's Kitchen in the foreground and the Empire State Building a bit farther back in frame.

I just came back from shooting pictures and I just want to thank you guys so much for the awesome suggestions. I went to the brooklyn heights promenade first just to stake the area out. Ate at grimaldi's then walked the brooklyn bridge a little. What's with the nasty tarps over the first part though?

Then we went back to the promenade for night photos. Awesome opportunities here, except my tripod wasn't tall enough to get over the fence up close so I had to prop it up on a bench. It was getting pretty late but we drove out to Weehawken next. We didn't do liberty state park since it was past 10 and we didn't want to risk not getting in and wasting time blvd east in Weehawken was a nice little area. Mostly empty but very safe. We didn't go in hamilton park but just took shots along blvd east. If the park had a closing time though we definitely missed it.

i'm still very new to photography though so some of my shots were disappointing
