Hi,

I just took a job in Morristown and am looking to commute from Hoboken via the train lines. I am not too familiar with any NY/NJ mass transit.

I have heard that with express trains (PATH and NJ Transit??), it is possible to make the commute in about 75 minutes. Does anyone know if this is true and, if so, which lines I'd be taking?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am desperate and have not been able to solve the trip planners on these transit websites.

Thank you.

You take the Morristown line from Hoboken to Morristown should take 90mins.....and you might have to switch in Summit....

I heard there was an express train. I am trying to figure out if that is true.

Simplest thing to do would be to examine the schedule.

New Jersey Transit

There are express trains, but they run inbound in the morning and outbound in the evening. They take about an hour, best case. About 75 minutes for the outbound morning commute on the Morris&Essex with local trains is doable:
538am -> 646am (one train)
615am -> 725am (one train)
658am -> 814am (change at Newark Broad or Summit)
731am -> 852am (change at Newark Broad)
754am -> 923am (change at Newark Broad or Summit)
825am -> 941am (change at Newark Broad)

You can actually save a couple of minutes in some cases by taking a Main/Bergen train to Secaucus and changing there. But it's a pain to switch at Secaucus; switching at Newark Broad or Summit is easier.

702am -> 814am (change at Secaucus)
756am -> 923am (change at Secaucus)

There is a schedule here: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0040.pdf

As some other posters said, if you miss a train, it might be faster to take a Main, Bergen, or Pascack Valley Line train to Secaucus, and then take a Morristown Line train from there. You have to look at the schedule to see if it pays.

http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0010.pdf (Pascack Valley Line schedule)
http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0020.pdf (Main/Bergen County Line schedule)

The problem is that a monthly pass from Hoboken to Morristown might not be valid for travel via Secaucus.

Changing at Secaucus is stupid , you have to go upstairs then onto another platform. Changing at Newark or Summit means just staying on that platform....

The OP may not need to transfer at all as there are direct from hoboken trains available. You should already know that.

I'm just saying that if he misses a direct train, it might be quicker to go to Secaucus rather than waiting for the next direct train.
