I wouldn't do anywhere in NJ outside of Hoboken or Jersey City without a car, honestly. However, neither is an easy commute to Princeton/Ewing with mass transit (yes, it exists but it's going to be a hassle.)
I have done several places outside jersey city and hoboken WITHOUT A CAR easily you just have yo learn the network thats all in SJ the 550 series routes run 24/7 and several rtes are available. The areas where a car is absolutely nessesary are NWNJ, morris county, western monmouth county, eastern mercer, southern burlington, cape may unless you are heading to AC where the 552 runs 24/7, salem county, and any travel that requires you to travel east to west in gloucester and north south in atlantic county!!!!

Right but there's very big differences between "impossible to do without a car", "difficult/annoying to do without a car" and "easy to do without a car".

With the exception of the handful of areas of Hudson County (Hoboken, Jersey City, places off the HBLR) - most of NJ does not fall into the easy category.

Obviously there are places were it's flat out impossible - many areas of south and northwest NJ as you mentioned. However, a lot of the areas that are "doable" are very difficult/annoying. Which is why I wouldn't recommend living in one of those areas without a car to someone without prefacing the difficulties that would be faced.

I would be remiss to move from an area you love which does seem more affordable in hope of being equally as happy in an area commutable to Princeton on a tight budget. It is really tough living here on a tight budget if that would be the case, if you are going to have the added expense of commuting. That being said, you could consider something north of Princeton in walking distance to the route 27 bus line from maybe Franklin Park, Somerset or in Princeton borough. There is also a rental complex in North Brunswick off of Finnegan's Lane called Colony Oaks which is reasonable and a short walk to the bus to Princeton or NYC in the other direction.

I would say New Brunswick is a fairly walkable town (a friend of mine lives there), and it is right near the Northeast Corridor Line, so you would simply have to take the train to Princeton or Trenton and then take a bus from there to your job.

The schedule is available here: http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0070.pdf

There is also decent local transit in the area, for your non-commuting needs.

Good luck!
