I was pulled over recently by an unsympathetic and ruthless NY State Trooper and was issued a 6-point speeding ticket. The traffic ticket states the radar clocked me at 76 in a 55 mph zone. I called the court and was told that the court and NYS Motor Vehicle Commission fees could be up to approx. $700! Is this accurate? Has anyone had such an experience? I understand that only 2 points will transfer to my NJ driver's license but I can't believe the exorbitant NY fees. This is my first ticket in approx. 15 years. I almost want to forget about this costly nightmare and burn the darn ticket. I cannot afford to take the day off from work and travel 4 hours north to fight a friggen speeding ticket. I (DO NOT) love New York! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Not much you can do except plead not guilty, drive up there and work out a deal. Chances are it would get reduced, but like you said, it's a day missed from work. Check on the fines, though - some of those fees could be surcharges that only apply to NYS residents through their DMV.
You have to go to court if you want to pay less. Especially with a 6 pointer. $700 sounds about right for that type of offense, were you in a construction zone by chance? In my youth I had MANY speeding tickets in NY. Each offense has a range of fines from low to high and it is all negotiated onsite. Usually what they will offer you a less points offense for instance a 2 or 4 point speeding violation( in your case you are at the very bottom of the 6 point scale so it will AT LEAST get dropped to a 4 point). My prediction is that if you go to court you can get off with a $300-$600 fine and 2 pts on your license. Since only 2 points transfer anyway you might be better off just paying the fine outright.
TD, it was not a construction site. The speed limit changed from 65 to 55 within a short period of time and I honestly did not realize the decrease in the limit until Trooper Personality told me.
Rob, the amounts are not listed on the "ticket" which is a piece of paper (unlike NJ).
Jrz77, I was going to pay the ticket and be done with it until I called the court and spoke w/a court official. She advised me that the fees of the ticket range from $90-300 (she seemed pretty sure that they would get me on the high end), court cost- $90; NY MVC fees-$400. I told her I reside in NJ and have a NJ driver's license. She responded that it did not matter and that the fees would still be imposed. That didn't seem right to me, hence, my post.
i received a speeding ticket in NY a couple of years ago. i was able to plea it down to a no point violation, and did it all through phone and mail. i think i was lucky though.
mine wasn't a 6 pointer though, I think it was 4 but can't remember for sure.
I don't think ruthless means what you think it means.
