Opinions, please...

What specific neighborhoods in Essex have the best combination of low (or at least FAIR) rents and accessibility to NYC bound mass transit? Obviously the second thing is best near rail stations, but I'm looking for that perfect combo of decent rents AND mass transit, of course still living in a reasonably safe neighborhood.

Schools and such are a non-issue (no kids). Potential rental is for a 1 bedroom apartment. I'd like a good idea of the best neighborhoods to target.

Define "Decent/fair rent", as your opinion will vary from person to person.

Most places in Essex will lead you to the city one way or another, even if you have to transfer (if you go by bus) to rail at Newark Penn.

While I love W.O., and plan on moving there, I definitely agree. There are other places in Essex that are quite a bit cheaper.

The OP still hasn't stated a budget. 600 might be "reasonable" for someone coming from...say, the midwest, but it's unlikely in Essex. Maybe they find a more realistic 1100-1250 reasonable. Until they post back, we can only guess.

OP: have you considered renting a room? That will save you some cash, too...

There are new apts on Broad St in Bloomfield. Nice safe area and the NYC bus stop is right across the street. Area is walkable too.

Budget is probably 850-950. So Yes, Bloomfield is where I've looked so far (that seems to be about the right range as long as you aren't looking for anything that big, or care about parking). Was curious about mass transit availability vs. overall rent in Clifton, Nutley, Belleville, etc. as well.
