Where is the best town to retire in? We are looking for a place that has a good active community, likes outdoor activities, within an hr. of the beach and walking access to towns.
You probably want to consider being close to good medical care, so probably rule out small towns. Are you looking for a condo or apartment-type dwelling to retire to, or a small house or townhome?
One of your best bets is to probably contact a realtor and ask them. There are a ton of 55+ retirement communities in South Jersey, but a realtor could probably help you narrow them down given what your wants/needs are.
Are you looking to buy a home, live in a retirement complex, what? Also what is your price range? I think the "walking access to towns" is probably your toughest requirement, we have that in OC, in a very walkable downtown, but of course in the off season it is not that "active" but there is still a lot to do. Margate is also a good bet. Your age group is probably the biggest population in all the shore towns. Haddonfield is also very walkable but more than an hour from the shore.
Not a mean or malicious intent but why would you want to retire in NJ?
I wonder why you would want to move to one of the most expensive states in the country? Your retirement money will run out really quickly trying to keep up with the cost of living.
The Margate-Longport area has a lot of retirees, and since families are continuing to move to Linwood/Northfield in droves for the schools, the proportion of year-round senior citizen residents is only getting higher. The area is very quiet (IE, dead) half the year, but some people prefer that kind of solitude. Margate has a few pleasant stretches of restaurants/small businesses among Ventnor Avenue. Ocean City has a bit more bustle. Also, keep in mind that Margate/Longport are almost overwhelmingly Jewish, while Ocean City is mostly German/Irish/Italian.
