We are thinking of moving to Pahrump? (Mesquite: sale, apartments)

We are loading up the moving truck (here in Ohio) in two days and starting the drive out to Pahrump... should get there on Nov 3rd if all goes well. I just want to thank everyone who has made posts about the town - you have really helped us in our decision of where to move to. After we arrive, pick out a rental house, and get moved in, I hope to post back to this thread with some of my first impressions in the hopes of helping anyone else considering moving to Pahrump.

Hey everybody,

We have arrived safely in Pahrump! We ended up taking the Colorado route, airics - I didn't check back to this thread in time to see your post. It was pretty nasty for about an hour or two, but we survived that part and the rest of the drive through the mountains was beyond beautiful. My favorite part of the drive I think though, was through Utah. All off those awesome rust blood red rock formations and a hundred+ miles between towns made me feel like we were driving through a Martian landscape, completely alien. Way cool. :-)

But anyways, we've been in Pahrump for a full 24 hours now, staying at the Best Western (the Nugget was too expensive, and Saddle West said their wireless was still under construction so we'd have to go to the laundry room to be able to get on the net on our laptops). We spent all day today running around to realty companies' properties and checking out a few private properties listed in the Pahrump Valley Times. We have at least two more full days of the same ahead before we make a decision.

My first impression of Pahrump itself: it's bigger and more modern than I'd originally imagined it to be, and it's more green than I'd imagined from the pictures I'd seen and the posts on this forum. Seems like there's a "downtown" area filled with tons of businesses and tons of rentals and several casinos and quite a few *green* parks and trees and even a decent bit of grass, considering it's a desert. Then there's the North end - travel about five or ten minutes North out of the city, and you hit total wasteland - almost no green, more gravel roads than paved, and sparsely scattered homes (many of which are very new and nice, some of which are for rent).

I look forward to learning more about the town, exploring it more, and finding a nice place (which it looks like in this market it'll be more difficult to choose between them than it will be to find one). I'm exhausted, excited, and overall pleasantly surprised with what I've discovered in Pahrump so far.

I'll try to update to this thread a little later on, once I've been here for a little longer than 24 hours. ;-)

I was thinking about you! I'm glad you made it there in one peace.. and oh yes, I agree with the drive, it is gorgeous. And you make me miss Parhump.. I'm up in Reno now, but have thought of going down that way to see how things have changed. I lived there about 10ish years ago, and I really liked it.

Hey Lauren,

First of all, welcome to Pahrump. You picked a good time to house hunt out here, things are MUCH cheaper than a few years ago.

Have you checked with Access Realty on Calvada? Ask for Kim. We flew in from our hometown, sat down with her, and in 2 hours we made an offer and it was accepted. She is great for getting the job done quickly.

We live in the center of town, by Blagg and Calvada, we have a few homes on our street for sale.. its a VERY nice area.. right by the golf course, so you can be out in the middle of nowhere NV but yet you are still in a nice area.

We just closed escrow on a fixer upper in Pahrump, and will start renovations soon. ;-)

How is the Home Depot and Wal-Mart? Do they have a good selection of stuff, and keep it in stock? Will probably be visiting there lots during our fixing!

Is Pahrump really expecting snow and such this following week? We were planning a visit to start some work on the house, and the bad weather expected is NOT a good thing!

We are looking to move to Pahrump as well, and have enjoied reading this thread.

We will be moving to NV (job moved, so we move or look for a new job) soon, and after looking at some of the silliness of LV itself, as well as the crime rate, etc., we have decided that commuting to LV daily is worth the pain.

We have LOTS of questions, some of which are admittedly weird... Things like where horses are allowed, where we can set up targets for practice (is it legal to shoot, etc.); our daughters like archery, air-rifle, and rifle/pistol shooting, and hope to compete with Team USA Shooting one day...

Overall, Pahrump sounds like a nice place. We look forward to talking with you-all more to find out all about "our new home to be"...

We lived in Pahrump for 3 years. We hated it. Not much to do. Not many good places to eat. No work. "Poof" dirt that blows & sticks to everthing. Had to dust inside constantly. In my opinion it's a really ugly town. I agree it is depressing & I do not know what outdoor activities there are. The only thing I miss is my home, which was really a good deal.
