Hello I'm considering moving to Ely for this job if it all goes as planned but have a few questions. I am 24 no kids no wife lol but I am going for this job in a few weeks. If I get it I will move there and I live in Jersey now(I dont fist pump) but what is it like? hows the apartments or houses if I was going to rent for now. I know its far from anything but all I hear is negatives what are the positives? Im not a big city guy I live in the suburbs in jersey and I just want to get out lol. Whats some advice anyone can share such as good or bad things? Is it expensive and whats there to do for fun?. If someone can write me back I would be grateful.

I don't think Ely has any apartment buildings that I have seen. Maybe you could rent a room to start.

The only negative about Ely is that it's isolated and far from anything. The big positive is that's great if you like the outdoors (fishing, hunting, camping, etc.) The town has most of your basic needs. It's on a major highway and gets tourists. There are a couple of casinos such as Jailhouse Casino - Ely Nevada - Reservations, Casino, Hotel, Motel, Cellblock Steakhouse, The Garden Coffee Shop, Great Basin National Park Lodging

Ely has a rail museum Nevada Northern Railway - The Ghost Train of Old Ely

Ely is also near Great Basin National Park and Lehman Caves Great Basin National Park (U.S. National Park Service) and Cave Lake State Park Cave Lake State Park | Nevada State Parks

I hope you like the great outdoors because there is plenty of it around Ely.

As far as housing, it's better than it was, but there is still a bit of a rental shortage. There are a couple of apartment complexes in town. Probably some of the worst housing available. About half of them are low income/Section 8 only, so if you have a job you're not gonna be able to get a place at one of those. If you want to buy a house, there's a glut of them on the market, but prices are way higher than they should be for what you get. A lot of people live in the motels that line Aultman street because of the lack of rental housing. Robinson mine did build some housing for managers in Ruth, and Midway Gold is looking to build some housing as well, and from what I understand the Midway housing will be for sale to people outside of the company, though I don't know any details. You can google the Ely Times for classified listings of rentals available and real estate agents (who sometimes have rentals). Can't link as CD doesnt like linking.

Yes, it's pretty isolated. That will take some getting used to. When we first moved here 9 years ago it was out of town almost every weekend and back home (Phoenix) ever 6-8 weeks. Now, we only go out of town maybe every couple of months. The necessities you can find here. There are a couple of grocery stores and a couple of hardware/general merchandise stores as well. Sure, it's more expensive that Walmart or Home Depot. Amazon Prime is a lifesaver out here. If it's not an emergency, it gets ordered from Amazon and here in a day or two. Buy a freezer or two and a Costco membership. Or get a hunting license and stock your freezer like many of the locals do. Hope you like driving because the closest "bigger" town, Elko, is 180 miles away and if you need a city, St. George is the closest at about 225 miles, though Vegas and Salt Lake are about 250 miles away each and take about the same time or less to go to St. George. Twin Falls, ID is also 250miles away, but I have only gone a couple of times. Nice town, but I personally ususally go to SLC or LV.

For fun? Well, much of the local population considers drinking themselves into oblivion fun. There is endless outdoor activities. And you're pretty much just a day's drive or less to most everything wonderful about living in the west.

Of the few bad things, I'd say as a single male, you probably wont find a huge pool of potential mates here. Not to say it can't/wont happen, but there's slim pickings. Alot of the "old guard" in town dont like outsiders and for years have tried to prevent change in town, but much of that is going by the wayside. And high speed internet availability is horrible. Half of the town cant get it and the half that can it's at capacity. There is a cable co. stringing up cable internet but it's not available in but a very small area at the moment. Verizon has 4g LTE and ATT has 4g HSPA (not true 4g), but wireless access is expensive.
