This is the most confusing revival of a zombie thread that I have seen.

Would US 50 & I 70 be the most scenic? My husband speeds whenever possible and relies on our Passport radar detector. Does US 50 pass through Indian reservations? I would hate to end up in some tribal court! or get a speeding ticket along the way. What is the speed limit on US 50 vs I 80?

Which route would you recommend?

We will be traveling with a dog and finding a nice place to stay is a concern--obviously Salt Lake City offers the best selection.

I'd recommend I-80 since there would be more facilities and creature comforts along the way. It is better for normal people. Especially yuppies and corporate ego maniacs. Certainly for those who drive a Land Rover. Plenty of gas stations and repair facilities. Unless you bring your own food, your vehicle has been 100% reliable, plan gas stops, don't get hungry for a sit down restaurant, don't need to take a dump or want to sleep in a decent hotel you are SOL, big-time.

Just plan on sending the courts your money because US-50 is paroled. Troopers are everywhere. Don't forget the Sheriffs too. They love out-of-towners. I spend lots of time on US-50. Never had a ticket because I do 3 MPH over. I assume there is a bogey on my tail at all times. A radar detector isn't enough. The authorities use laser, instant-on, stalking, ambush and many other techniques. They are sneaky and move around like Mountain Lions in the night.

I'll post on this old thread because new people may want this info.

My family lives in Denver so I go back and forth frequently. I usually take 50 but occasionally take 80. I prefer 50 because there is way less traffic (I usually travel mid week) and I think much more interesting.

I take a cooler with food and water so I don't have to worry about finding a place to eat although you can in Austin, Eureka or Ely. You can get gas/diesel in those towns as well.

I generally run between 80 and 90 and have never gotten stopped. I will slow down a bit when I see another car coming or am coming up behind one. I very rarely see NHP patrolling but maybe I just go at the right times. You do have to slow down and obey the speed limits when you come into towns.

You will run up on slow moving trucks occasionally but usually they are running at a pretty good clip. There are plenty of places to pass the slow ones.

You can run pretty fast on 80 as well as the speed limit is a 75 to 80. Lot's more trucks and car traffic though. Many more towns to stop and eat or fuel up. I recommend The Pig in Winnemucca!
