Okay ... another "where to move?" thread. We're looking for an easy commute to Vanderbilt, proximity to good public schools (elementary at least), and a decent house in the high 200s/low 300s.

From everything I've seen online Bellevue seems to fit the bill with the most housing bang for our buck, but how would you describe that area? Does it have a suburban feel, or does it feel like part of the city? Strip malls and chains, or local atmosphere? Does it have a distinctly conservative or liberal inclination? Racially diverse? Older population, or young families? Can you walk around the area, or do you need a car to go anywhere? Lots of new development? How does it compare to Green Hills or Sylvan Park?

I realize we're not going to know for sure until we make the trip to Nashville and drive around ... just trying to do my homework first! Thanks!

Bellevue is very suburban. There are some localy owned restaurants/bars (Jonathan's, new Broadway West on hwy 100, Corner Pub come to mind) but they are spread out as are the chain/strip malls. Some of the individual subdivisions have sidewalks but overall the area is not very walkable. There has been quite a bit of development out the hwy 100 area (a relatively new Publix with other chain type stores attached). You will be getting in your car to go about anywhere as there really is no central "downtown" type area. I believe the schools are pretty decent, and it's a low crime area. It's a pretty conservative area (the councilman from there, Eric Crafton, tried to pass the "English only" initiative for all metro government offices), predominately white, and a lot of young families (and retirees).

My wife and I live in Bellevue and really like it. I does have more of a suburnan feel. We both work at Vanderbilt and the morning commute is only around 20 minutes. Bellevue has all the essentials...grocery, basic shopping, and some restaurants. Also, Nashville West is a 5 minute drive for better shopping (Dick's, Old Nacy, Best Buy, World Market, etc.). My wife and I love being so close to Edwin/Percy Warner Parks as well. I don't think you should have a problem finding a house in Bellevue within your price range.

I live just off Hwy 100 behind the Publix-it's fairly diverse I guess for Nashville-I'm a single, white male and I've seen a few other singles in the neighborhood, most people are married though-from young 20s married to retired. The majority are white but there are blacks, whites, indian (eastern), asians living here. I don't have kids, but my coworker who lives a neighborhood over says the elem school here (Harpeth something I think the name is) is very good, and they are building onto it. I think it's some of the best bang for the buck you'll find in all of Davidson when you consider crime is VERY low out here.
