Maybe it sounds crazy, but a big factor in selecting which of two places I'll be moving to is BUGS -- especially the annoying airborne kind, like flies, junebugs and mosquitos. My contenders are the Portland, OR or Nashville, TN areas (West Linn or Franklin, specifically.)

My dogs and I are in and out the back door many times a day. Keeping flies off them, me and out of the house in the summertime is a constant effort, and that's here in relatively dry Los Angeles. I'm wondering if the humidity in OR or TN makes it worse.

So, what's the level of pesky bugs in the Nashville area? Is there a "pesky bug season?"

Well, I can't really compare our bug population to other places, but we do have them. I assume that's true of most areas of the US with a relatively mild climate. I'm not sure where you go to get away from bugs except for some of the more extreme climate or high altitude areas of the country.

The worst time for bugs here is probably late spring or early summer, but I'm just guessing.

Default Bugs

I haven't had too much trouble with bugs this year. I sit outside under my fans and that keeps a lot of pest away. There are many bug sprays these days that smell nice and do the trick. My little poodle doesn't seem to be bothered by them. Come on down!

Well we just moved here in April from The Central Valley of California and yes there are bugs. Weird bugs that we have never experienced. Some are pesty and some are just dumb . We love it here and would never think of going back to Calif... I don't know about Portland. Although it was on our short list of places to retire. Hope this helps

We have dogs going in and out all day so flies are definitely a problem. I have fly swatters in the house and out on my patio table. I just bought one of those Fly Motels by Raid for outside to see if it helps any. I moved here from Connecticut last year, and can say I had the same problem up there with flies.

Thank you all for your responses. I do love TN and especially its folks. But you're verifying a concern which is significant for me, because I always have a group of 5-8 rescued dogs. No matter how clean I keep them and splash them with that citrus repellant, soon enough flies are buzzing around and after their ears.

I'll monitor to see any more words of wisdom. Warm regards to you all.

I see you're from Los Angeles. So am I. We live in the Valley and just bought a home North of Nashville. Los Angeles has bugs, but nothing like any other places I've ever seen. We're lucky on the bug thing.. I'm already getting ready for a fight! LOL but most places in the world have bugs...and boy do I hate them...the ones that fly and sting are the worse of course. I'm quite allergic to bees and wasps and hornets. But if that's what keeping you away from Nashville area you should re-think...it's really nice place and very nice people. What a change from Los Angeles. Trust me, I will miss all my friends here, but the quality of life is much better. Bugs are everywhere, but nice cities to live are far and few between.
